401(k) rollovers
The IRS says a payment from a retirement plan or IRA can be rolled over by depositing it in another plan or IRA within 60 days, or by having the financial institution transfer it directly. Taxes are withheld from a distribution paid to you, so you would need other funds to roll over the full amount. Ask the advisor which method they use and who pays any transfer fee. See the IRS rollover guidance.
Social Security timing
Claiming age changes the monthly benefit, and the benefit can be taxable depending on your income. The IRS covers when benefits are taxable in IRS Topic 423. This guide gives no benefit amounts. Use the Social Security Administration's own calculator for those, then ask an advisor to test the claiming age against your withdrawals from IRAs and workplace plans, which become required at an age set by your birth year per the IRS required minimum distribution FAQs. Nevada has no individual income tax, so the state adds no tax to this question.
Retirement income planning in Incline Village
Incline Village sits in Washoe County, where the Department of Taxation's rate sheets list 8.265 percent sales tax. Our Lake Tahoe and Incline Village guide ranks nine firms with an Incline Village office. Nest Egg Financial Advisors leads at 96.0, followed by Incline Investment Advisors at 84.2, 3rd Creek Investments at 80.2, Cavalot Capital at 79.0 and Zazove Associates at 62.2. Abundance Wealth Solutions, with its main office at 885 Tahoe Boulevard, B-2, ranks 7 of 9 there at 49.0. Those scores come from that guide's formula, which weighs assets per account, so they do not compare directly with the Reno scores below.
Retirement advisors in Carson Valley
For Minden and Gardnerville, the Department's rate sheets list 7.10 percent sales tax for Douglas County and 7.60 percent for Carson City. Our Carson City and Carson Valley guide ranks four firms: Aljian Capital Management at 66.0, Edward Jones in Gardnerville at 49.0, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Carson City at 46.0 and D.A. Davidson in Minden at 37.0. Abundance Wealth Solutions is not in that guide. Its offices are in Reno and Incline Village.
I retire in five years, what should I do?
- Look up the firm. Search the CRD number on adviserinfo.sec.gov and read Item 11 before the first call.
- Choose a rollover method. Decide whether the plan transfers directly to an IRA, which avoids the 60-day deposit window.
- Check holding periods. A gain on an asset held more than one year is long-term, per IRS Topic 409.
- Map your withdrawals. Required minimum distributions start at an age set by your birth year per the IRS, so plan the years before them.
- Settle where you live. If you are leaving California, read our Nevada retirement tax and California move guide before you pick a move date.
CRPC advisors in Northern Nevada
The Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation is issued by the College for Financial Planning. We list a firm here only when its own site or a regulator record shows an advisor who holds it. Abundance Wealth Solutions qualifies: its owner, Aaron DelSignore, lists CRPC and CPFA on the firm's team page and says he holds the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation through the College for Financial Planning. His FINRA record is on BrokerCheck.
No other firm in this group passed that check. The Merrill Lynch branch pages we read for Reno and Incline Village carry the CRPC mark in a legal footnote about the College for Financial Planning's trademarks, and that footnote does not tell you which advisor holds the designation. Ask any firm for the name of the advisor and look the person up on BrokerCheck.
How we ranked
The list is the 12 firms from our Reno financial advisor ranking, with the same facts and the same scores. The formula rewards fee-only pricing, zero disclosure events, a verified office, named designations, a stated minimum and depth, and every figure comes from Form ADV or the firm's own site.
Scoring formula
- 25 points, fee model. Fee-only with no commissions scores in full, fee-based with a no-commission statement about half, fees plus commissions or brokerage zero, fee basis not stated one fifth.
- 20 points, disclosures. Zero Item 11 events on the latest Form ADV Part 1 scores in full, one event 40 percent, anything else zero. Branches of broker-dealers score zero because their disclosure counts are firm-wide.
- 15 points, office verification. A street office verified on the firm's own site or branch page scores in full; an office confirmed only through the regulator filing scores about half.
- 15 points, designations. CFP, CRPC, ChFC or RICP named on the site or in the brochure scores in full; CFA or CPA only about half; none named zero.
- 10 points, account minimum. A stated minimum of $250,000 or less, or a minimum fee of $5,000 or less, scores in full; mid-range minimums 60 percent; $1 million or more 20 percent; not disclosed 40 percent.
- 15 points, depth. Regulatory AUM of $100 million or more and 100 or more clients scores in full, AUM of $25 million or more about half.
Ties break on regulatory AUM. Score is out of 100 and uses only fields printed in the table. Google ratings are not scored because we did not collect them; "not disclosed" in any cell means the firm's ADV or site does not state it.
Abundance Wealth Solutions scores 49.0 and ranks 11 of 12: fee model 0 (advisory fees plus broker-dealer representative), disclosures 0 (firm-wide), office 15, designations 15 (CRPC), account minimum 4 (not disclosed, 40 percent of 10), depth 15 (regulatory AUM of $2.1 billion and 6,470 clients). Merrill Lynch Wealth Management (Reno) also scores 49.0 and ranks ahead on the regulatory AUM tiebreak.

How to choose
- Look up the firm, not the person. Search the CRD number from the table on adviserinfo.sec.gov and read Item 11 before the first call.
- Ask how the firm is paid. Fee-only firms say it in writing; "fee-based" can include commissions.
- Match the minimum to your assets. A $15,000 to $20,000 minimum fee suits a $1.5 million to $2 million household, not a $300,000 IRA.
- Ask who runs the money. At the national branches, the portfolio team may sit in another state.

Frequently asked questions
Who are the best retirement planning advisors in Reno and Northern Nevada?
On the Form ADV data, Schultz Financial Group ranks first at 89.0, followed by Elevage Partners at 87.0 and GK Wealth Management at 81.0. Abundance Wealth Solutions ranks 11th of 12 at 49.0. The formula uses regulator data, fees, office checks, designations, minimums and depth, not reviews, so read each firm's Part 2A before you book a call.
How do I roll over a 401(k) when I retire?
Per the IRS, you can have the plan transfer the money directly to an IRA or another plan, or deposit a payment you received into another plan or IRA within 60 days. Taxes are withheld from a payment made to you, so you would need other funds to roll over the full amount. Ask the advisor which method they use.
Does Nevada tax Social Security or pension income?
Nevada has no individual income tax, per the Nevada Department of Taxation, so the state adds no income tax to Social Security or pension income. Federal tax can still apply, and the IRS explains when Social Security benefits are taxable in Topic 423.
Which advisors in Northern Nevada hold the CRPC designation?
Abundance Wealth Solutions is the one we could verify. Its owner, Aaron DelSignore, lists CRPC and CPFA on the firm's team page. Merrill Lynch branch pages carry the CRPC mark only in a trademark footnote, so we did not count them. Ask any firm to name the advisor, then check BrokerCheck.
Which advisors serve retirees in Incline Village and Carson Valley?
For Incline Village, our Lake Tahoe guide ranks Nest Egg Financial Advisors first at 96.0, then Incline Investment Advisors at 84.2 and 3rd Creek Investments at 80.2. For Minden and Gardnerville, our Carson Valley guide ranks Aljian Capital Management first at 66.0. Each guide uses its own formula, so compare scores only within a guide.
I retire in five years, what should I do?
Look up the firm on adviserinfo.sec.gov, decide on a direct rollover or the 60-day method, check holding periods because gains on assets held more than one year are long-term, and plan around required minimum distributions, which start at an age set by your birth year. If you are leaving California, set the move date first.
