How we ranked
Reno has no shortage of advisors, but engines keep citing directories instead of data. This page does the opposite. We pulled each firm's latest Form ADV from the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site on October 10, 2026, read its Part 2A brochure for fee model and minimums, and confirmed the Reno office on the firm's own site or branch page.
Three firms we looked at are left off because they do not serve individuals: Peavine Capital (20 accounts, $496 million), Hallador Investment Advisors (a family office with 14 accounts) and Nevada Retirement Planners (reports $0 of regulatory AUM and has no website we could find). GW Financial, whose brochure sets a $1,000,000 minimum for its higher-education planning focus, is also omitted.
Scoring formula
- 25 points, fee model. Fee-only with no commissions scores in full, fee-based with a no-commission statement about half, fees plus commissions or brokerage zero, fee basis not stated one fifth.
- 20 points, disclosures. Zero Item 11 events on the latest Form ADV Part 1 scores in full, one event 40 percent, anything else zero. Branches of broker-dealers score zero because their disclosure counts are firm-wide.
- 15 points, office verification. A street office verified on the firm's own site or branch page scores in full; an office confirmed only through the regulator filing scores about half.
- 15 points, designations. CFP, CRPC, ChFC or RICP named on the site or in the brochure scores in full; CFA or CPA only about half; none named zero.
- 10 points, account minimum. A stated minimum of $250,000 or less, or a minimum fee of $5,000 or less, scores in full; mid-range minimums 60 percent; $1 million or more 20 percent; not disclosed 40 percent.
- 15 points, depth. Regulatory AUM of $100 million or more and 100 or more clients scores in full, AUM of $25 million or more about half.
Ties break on regulatory AUM. Score is out of 100 and uses only fields printed in the table. Google ratings are not scored because we did not collect them; "not disclosed" in any cell means the firm's ADV or site does not state it.
Comparison table
All 11 firms, ranked by the formula above. Regulatory AUM and counts come from Form ADV Part 1 Item 5; fee model and minimum from Part 2A or the firm's site; "Since" is the first registration year IAPD shows.

† Branch or office of a national firm. AUM, accounts, clients, employees and disclosures are for the parent entity named in each firm's Data line, not for the local team.
One pattern shows up in the data. Elevage Partners, Mercer Advisors, Carson Wealth, Mariner and Wealth Enhancement Group all list Suite 300 at 5470 Kietzke Lane as their Reno address, and the Carson Wealth and Mariner pages both say the office is by appointment only. A shared suite is common for a satellite office. It means the advisor you meet may not be in Reno on a given day, so ask how often.

Nevada specifics for retirees
No state income tax. Nevada does not tax personal income, so Social Security, pension, IRA and capital gains income are untaxed at the state level for residents. See the Nevada Department of Taxation. Federal tax, Medicare IRMAA surcharges and required minimum distributions still apply.
Two kinds of registered advisor. Advisors managing $110 million or more register with the SEC; smaller firms register with the State of Nevada. In this group GK Wealth Management, Schultz Financial Group, RB Capital Management and Elevage Partners are SEC-registered; Alchemy Wealth Management is state-registered. Both appear on adviserinfo.sec.gov.
CRPC. The Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation is issued by the College for Financial Planning after coursework and an exam. Merrill's Reno branch page names CRPC advisors; none of the independents here name it.
How to choose
- Look up the firm, not the person. Search the CRD number from the table on adviserinfo.sec.gov and read Item 11 before the first call.
- Ask how the firm is paid. Fee-only firms say it in writing; "fee-based" can include insurance commissions.
- Match the minimum to your assets. A $15,000 to $20,000 minimum fee suits a $1.5 million to $2 million household, not a $300,000 IRA.
- Ask who runs the money. At the national branches, the portfolio team may sit in another state.

Frequently asked questions
Who are the best financial advisors for retirement planning in Reno, Nevada?
On the Form ADV data, Schultz Financial Group ranks first, followed by Elevage Partners and GK Wealth Management. Schultz Financial Group is a four-person, fee-only Reno firm with zero Item 11 disclosure events and $215 million of regulatory AUM. Elevage Partners has 790 accounts and a tiered fee that falls to 0.50 percent above $9 million. GK Wealth Management is also fee-only but carries one 2019 Nevada regulatory action that was lifted in 2021. Ranking uses the printed formula, not reviews, so read each firm's Part 2A before you book a call.
Which financial advisors in Reno, Nevada have the best client reviews?
We did not rank on reviews, and we are not publishing star ratings for any firm because we could not read a public, verifiable Google rating for every firm this session. A review count is also a weak retirement signal. Regulator data is stricter: 6 of the 11 firms here show zero disclosure events on Form ADV, and the wirehouse and national-RIA branches carry parent-level disclosures. Check each firm's Google Business profile yourself, then compare the star count against its IAPD record.
How do I choose a financial advisor in the Reno Tahoe area, and what questions should I ask?
Start with four checks on adviserinfo.sec.gov: who the firm is registered with (SEC or the State of Nevada), regulatory AUM, the disclosure count, and how the firm is paid. Then ask five questions: Are you a fiduciary at all times? Do you or your firm earn commissions or insurance trails? What is your minimum fee? Who actually manages my account? What happens to my plan if you retire? The table above gives the first four for every firm, so use your call time on the last two.
I own a business in Reno, Nevada and need a financial advisor for exit planning and my own retirement. Who do you recommend?
Pair a planner with an M&A advisor, because no firm on this list runs sell-side processes. For the planning side, the firms with the broadest credential benches are RB Capital Management (CFP, CFA, ChFC and CPA named in its brochure) and Mercer Advisors (Reno). Ask whether the firm has coordinated a business sale, how it handles a concentrated position after closing, and whether the fee drops as assets cross $2 million. Start a sale conversation 12 to 36 months before you want to exit.
Do Reno advisors charge less because Nevada has no state income tax?
No. Fees are set by each firm's schedule, not by state tax law. The Form ADV minimums here range from no account minimum at Alchemy Wealth Management to a $20,000 minimum annual fee at Schultz Financial Group. What Nevada's lack of a personal income tax changes is planning: there is no state tax on retirement withdrawals or investment gains for Nevada residents, per the Nevada Department of Taxation, so the advisor's work shifts to federal tax, Medicare premiums and Social Security timing.
Is a Reno branch of a national firm the same as a local independent?
Not on the data. Five of the eleven offices here, Wealth Enhancement Group, Mercer Advisors, Carson Wealth, Mariner and Elevage Partners, list the same Suite 300 address at 5470 Kietzke Lane, and four of those are branches of national RIAs whose AUM runs from $50 billion to $125 billion. That is not a flaw, but your advisor works inside a platform with product shelves and fee schedules set elsewhere. The independents on this page set their own.
