How we ranked the firms
The list is written for the owner of a building materials distributor, lumber yard group, millwork house or roofing and siding supplier with 5 to 20 branches. A firm qualified only if its own website shows a building products, lumber or distribution transaction. We scored each qualifying firm on five criteria that total 100.
Scoring weights
Published distribution deal record, 35. Named distributor sales on the firm's own transaction pages, with the firm's role stated.
Building products sector focus, 25. A named building products, building industry or distribution sector page or category.
Fit for founder and family owned sellers, 20. Named sellers that look like a family or founder owned multi-location business, not only a large corporate carve-out.
Named senior team, 10. A named banker or partner on the page.
Dated, recent deals, 10. A visible closing date, with more credit for recent dates.
Excluded from scoring: press coverage on its own, because the firm has to publish the deal itself; manufacturer sales, which do not count as distribution deals; deals where the page does not say the firm advised; and any claim without a public page behind it. Buy-side mandates are labeled as buy-side.
Where a page carries no date, the entry says so rather than guess. Facts are as published on each firm's site as of October 2026, and every page is linked in the Sources section.

Tier A: Building industry specialists
These two firms organise their practice around building products and distribution and publish more than one distributor deal.
1 The JIAN Group
Advisory firm in Fredericksburg, Virginia whose building products and distribution sector page covers lumber, millwork, windows, doors, steel, cabinets, roofing and siding.
Best for: Lumber, millwork, window and door distributors that want an advisor whose sector page is built around distribution.
The JIAN Group lists building products and distribution as a named sector and describes the range: building product distribution across lumber, millwork, windows, doors, steel, cabinets, roofing and siding. Its address is 11901 Bowman Drive in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and its site says it has operated "since our founding in 1992" with clients from $25 million to $500 million in revenue.
The proof sits on the firm's own transaction pages. Each page names the seller and the buyer and says The JIAN Group acted as financial advisor to the seller: Douglas Lumber to Builders FirstSource, Wyoming Millwork Co. to Builders FirstSource, Stuart Building Products to White Cap, and Broward Roofing Supply to Gulfeagle Supply. Its transactions list adds KW Building Products and Harris Door & Millwork (both to Trimlite, a Wynnchurch Capital platform company), OMEGA Products to Cemex and L.D. Mullins Lumber to US LBM.
| Distribution deal | Douglas Lumber to Builders FirstSource; Wyoming Millwork Co. to Builders FirstSource; Stuart Building Products to White Cap; Broward Roofing Supply to Gulfeagle Supply |
| Role stated | Financial advisor to the seller |
| Tier | A |
Considerations: The transaction pages carry no dates, so recency is not visible. Ask for the list of distribution closes from the last 24 months and the buyer on each.
Firm pages: JIAN building products and distribution sector page; JIAN transactions list; Douglas Lumber to Builders FirstSource; Wyoming Millwork to Builders FirstSource; Stuart Building Products to White Cap; Broward Roofing Supply to Gulfeagle Supply; Harris Door & Millwork to Trimlite; KW Building Products to Trimlite.
2 Anchor Peabody
Investment bank that describes itself as built for the building industry, with a team led by former owners, operators and investors from that industry.
Best for: Owners who want to compare a sale against growing by acquisition, since the firm has published both sell-side and buy-side work.
Anchor Peabody calls itself the premier investment bank for the building industry. Its about page says its bankers are "insiders" led by former owners, operators and investors from the building industry, working in a virtual, industry-specialist model.
Its news pages give dated deals. On August 1, 2022 it announced it was exclusive advisor to Foxworth-Galbraith, a Plano, Texas lumber and building materials distributor with more than $1 billion in revenue across five states, on its sale to USLBM Holdings. On March 14, 2024 it announced the sale of Homestead Building Systems, a Mid-Atlantic structural building components manufacturer and distributor, to US LBM. On July 22, 2025 it was listed as representing Hammond Lumber on its acquisition of Ware-Butler Building Supply, a deal the release says takes Hammond from 22 to 34 locations.
| Distribution deal | Foxworth-Galbraith to USLBM Holdings (August 1, 2022); Homestead Building Systems to US LBM (March 14, 2024) |
| Role stated | Exclusive advisor to the seller (Foxworth-Galbraith); advisor on the sale (Homestead); representing the buyer (Hammond Lumber) |
| Tier | A |
Considerations: Foxworth-Galbraith is far larger than a 5 to 20 branch distributor, so ask which closes are closest to your size. Homestead is a components business that also distributes, and the Hammond deal is a buy-side mandate, not a sale.
Firm pages: Anchor Peabody about page; Anchor Peabody represents Foxworth-Galbraith; Anchor Peabody represents Homestead Building Systems; Hammond Lumber acquisition of Ware-Butler Building Supply.
Tier B: Sector group plus a named distributor sale
These firms run a building products sector or category and publish a named distributor sale.
3 Capstone Partners
National middle market investment bank that tags its distributor sale in a Building Products and Construction Services category.
Best for: Family-owned wholesale and two-step distributors running several distribution centers.
Capstone Partners published the sale of Snavely Forest Products to Weekes Forest Products on February 2, 2018, naming itself exclusive financial advisor. Snavely was founded in 1902, was family-owned, operated as a two-step distributor and ran five distribution centers.
The page lists David Felts and Jonathan I. Mishkin, both Managing Directors, and files the deal under Building Products and Construction Services. That is a named senior team on a real wholesale distribution sale, which is what a multi-branch owner should look for.
| Distribution deal | Snavely Forest Products to Weekes Forest Products (February 2, 2018) |
| Role stated | Exclusive financial advisor |
| Tier | B |
Considerations: The one distribution deal on the page is from 2018. Ask Capstone for closes in the last two years and whether Mr. Felts or Mr. Mishkin would lead your process.
Firm pages: Capstone Partners advised Snavely Forest Products.
4 Lincoln International
Global middle market investment bank with a Building Products sector and a published sale of Huttig Building Products.
Best for: Larger multi-state distributors of millwork, building materials and wood products.
Lincoln International lists the sale of Huttig Building Products to Woodgrain in its Building Products sector, with Huttig named as the client. Huttig is described on the page as one of the largest domestic distributors of millwork, building materials and wood products.
The page names Jeffrey Corum and Scott Molinaro, Managing Directors in Chicago, as the senior team.
| Distribution deal | Huttig Building Products to Woodgrain (2022) |
| Role stated | Advisor to Huttig (listed as client) |
| Tier | B |
Considerations: Huttig sits at the large end of this market. A distributor with 5 to 20 branches should ask whether the same team takes mandates at its size.
Firm pages: Lincoln International, Huttig Building Products.
5 PMCF
Investment bank whose Construction and Building Products sector lists Building Products and Materials Distribution.
Best for: Hardwood, plywood and custom millwork distributors.
PMCF announced on February 19, 2025 that it advised Austin Hardwoods of Denver, a supplier of hardwood lumber, plywood and custom millwork founded in 1979, on its sale to Banks Hardwoods. The firm was exclusive investment banker.
PMCF also advised Besse Forest Products Group on its sale to the Hoffmann Family of Companies on March 19, 2024. Besse is a producer, so it does not count as a distribution deal here.
| Distribution deal | Austin Hardwoods of Denver to Banks Hardwoods (February 19, 2025) |
| Role stated | Exclusive investment banker |
| Tier | B |
Considerations: One recent distribution sale is public. Ask how many hardwood and millwork distributors the team has sold beyond it.
Firm pages: PMCF advises Austin Hardwoods of Denver; PMCF advises Besse Forest Products Group.
6 BDO Capital
Investment bank that describes its building products client base as founder-owned companies.
Best for: A founder-owned dealer with a handful of lumber and hardware locations in one region.
BDO Capital's transaction page records the December 31, 2020 sale of Jennings Builders Supply and Hardware to US LBM, with BDO Capital as exclusive advisor. Jennings was founded in 1984 and operated four locations in western North Carolina.
The page speaks to "founder-owned companies in the building products industry", which is the profile of the owner this guide is written for.
| Distribution deal | Jennings Builders Supply and Hardware to US LBM (December 31, 2020) |
| Role stated | Exclusive advisor |
| Tier | B |
Considerations: The deal is from 2020. Ask for closes since then and the name of the banker who would run your sale.
Firm pages: BDO Capital, Jennings Builders Supply and Hardware.

7 Oaklins
Global M&A network whose Jacksonville team sold a four-store lumber and farm supply dealer.
Best for: Family-owned multi-store lumber yards and farm and home supply retailers.
Oaklins lists the May 2022 sale of Sparr Building and Farm Supply to Nation's Best Holdings. Sparr was family-owned, ran four stores and employed about 150 people. The Jacksonville team acted as intermediary and exclusive financial advisor to the seller.
The page names Doug Kravet and William Nicholson of Jacksonville as the principals.
| Distribution deal | Sparr Building and Farm Supply to Nation's Best Holdings (May 2022) |
| Role stated | Intermediary and exclusive financial advisor to the seller |
| Tier | C |
Considerations: One building products deal is public from this team. Confirm that the Jacksonville team, not another Oaklins office, would run your process.
Firm pages: Oaklins, Sparr Building and Farm Supply.
8 CLA
Accounting and advisory firm that advised on the sale of two Minnesota lumberyards to a 70-plus location platform.
Best for: Midwest lumberyard owners who want an advisor that sits inside an accounting and advisory firm.
CLA announced in 2021 that it advised on the sale of Foley Lumber and Milaca Building Center, two Minnesota lumberyards, to American Construction Source, which the page describes as a platform with more than 70 locations across nine states. CLA was exclusive financial advisor.
| Distribution deal | Foley Lumber and Milaca Building Center to American Construction Source (2021 announcement) |
| Role stated | Exclusive financial advisor |
| Tier | C |
Considerations: One lumberyard transaction is the public record here. Ask who on the CLA side has run distribution mandates and how many.
Firm pages: CLA advises on sale of Milaca Building Center and Foley Lumber.
9 Lakeside Partners
Investment bank with offices in Minneapolis, Seattle and Sioux Falls that sold a specialty wood products dealer to SRS Distribution.
Best for: Specialty dealers of decking, siding and heavy forest products.
Lakeside Partners lists the sale of Specialty Wood Products to SRS Distribution. Specialty Wood Products is based in Aurora, Colorado, was founded in 1989 and is a specialty dealer of decking, siding and heavy forest products. Lakeside was financial advisor, and the page names Tom Newell, Partner, as the contact.
| Distribution deal | Specialty Wood Products to SRS Distribution |
| Role stated | Financial advisor |
| Tier | C |
Considerations: The page is undated. Ask when it closed and whether the firm has run other building products distribution sales.
Firm pages: Lakeside Partners, Specialty Wood Products.
10 Stout
Advisory and investment banking firm with offices in New York and Chicago that sold a Pennsylvania veneer and panel distributor.
Best for: Specialty panel, plywood and veneer distributors.
Stout's experience page describes the sale of Russell Plywood, a distributor of high quality veneer products in Reading, Pennsylvania founded in 1953, to Würth Baer Supply. Stout was exclusive financial advisor.
| Distribution deal | Russell Plywood to Würth Baer Supply |
| Role stated | Exclusive financial advisor |
| Tier | C |
Considerations: The page carries no date. Ask when the deal closed, who led it and whether that person is still at the firm.
Firm pages: Stout, advised sale of a leading distributor of high quality veneer products.
11 KPMG Corporate Finance
Corporate finance arm of KPMG that advised the shareholders of an exterior building supplies distributor on its sale to SRS Distribution.
Best for: Roofing, siding and exterior supply distributors with several locations.
KPMG Corporate Finance lists the sale of Marvic Supply Company to SRS Distribution. Marvic, based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, distributed exterior building supplies from seven locations with 98 employees. Frank Terry and his family acquired it in 1967 and ran it.
That profile, a family-run multi-location exterior supply distributor, is close to the owner this guide targets.
| Distribution deal | Marvic Supply Company to SRS Distribution |
| Role stated | Exclusive financial advisor to the shareholders |
| Tier | C |
Considerations: The page is undated. Ask when it closed and which bankers worked on it.
Firm pages: KPMG Corporate Finance, Marvic Supply Company.
How to Choose
Three questions separate the firms quickly.
- Which of your closest sales did this firm close, and who bought? Ask for three distributor sales near your branch count and product line, with the buyer on each.
- Who runs my process? Several pages name the senior bankers. Ask whether that person, not a junior team, leads your sale.
- Which buyers will you call first and why? A distribution specialist should name consolidators and regional competitors by pattern, not by a generic list.
What the ProCloser Deal Index Shows for This Sector
The index covers technology and software sellers, so it is the wrong tool for sizing a lumber or millwork distributor. Searching it for building products, lumber and distribution terms returns three software deals: CyberBOS acquired by Paladin Data Corp (June 18, 2026), Savance Enterprise acquired by Klipboard (January 15, 2026) and Roofle acquired by SalesRabbit (January 6, 2026). None is a distributor.
That sample is under 10, so this guide states no valuation multiple and no buyer mix from the index. The buyer names in this guide come from the advisors' own transaction pages, and they point mostly to consolidators. Browse the ProCloser deal index for the sectors it does cover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the best M&A advisors for a building products or lumber distributor?
The JIAN Group and Anchor Peabody lead this guide because both centre their practice on building products and distribution and both publish multiple distribution deals. Capstone Partners, Lincoln International, PMCF and BDO Capital follow with a sector group and a named distributor sale. Oaklins, CLA, Lakeside Partners, Stout and KPMG Corporate Finance each show one named distributor sale on their own sites. Match the firm to your product line using the routing table above.
Which M&A advisors have sold lumber yards?
Capstone Partners sold Snavely Forest Products (five distribution centers) to Weekes Forest Products. BDO Capital sold Jennings Builders Supply and Hardware (four locations) to US LBM. Oaklins sold Sparr Building and Farm Supply (four stores) to Nation's Best Holdings. CLA advised on the sale of Foley Lumber and Milaca Building Center to American Construction Source. The JIAN Group lists Douglas Lumber and L.D. Mullins Lumber, and Anchor Peabody advised Foxworth-Galbraith. Each sits on the advisor's own site, linked in Sources.
What size of distributor do these advisors work with?
The named sellers range widely. Marvic Supply ran seven locations with 98 employees, Jennings ran four locations and Sparr ran four stores. Foxworth-Galbraith reported more than $1 billion in revenue and Huttig is described as one of the largest domestic millwork and building materials distributors. A distributor with 5 to 20 branches sits between those ends, so ask each firm for its three closest comparables by branch count and revenue.
Do I need a distribution specialist or will a generalist M&A advisor do?
Ask for the record, not the label. A distributor sale turns on inventory, vendor programs, branch level profit, real estate and who the strategic buyers are. An advisor with several closed distribution sales will already know the buyers' acquisition patterns and the diligence requests. Whether a generalist can do it is answered by the closes the firm can show you with named buyers.
Who buys building products and lumber distributors?
The buyers named on the advisors' own pages include US LBM, SRS Distribution, Builders FirstSource, American Construction Source, Nation's Best Holdings, Banks Hardwoods, Würth Baer Supply, White Cap, Gulfeagle Supply, Weekes Forest Products, Woodgrain, Cemex and Trimlite, a platform company of Wynnchurch Capital. Most are consolidators building regional or national distribution footprints, which is why a multi-branch owner often has several credible bidders.
What do buyers diligence in a multi-branch distributor?
Buyers typically ask for branch level profit and loss statements, inventory aging and valuation, vendor and rebate agreements, customer concentration, and whether the real estate is owned or leased. Working capital is the other large item, because inventory and receivables swing with building seasons. An advisor who has closed distribution deals will have these schedules template-ready before the process starts.
Does owning the real estate change how I sell?
Often yes. Many family-owned distributors hold yards and warehouses personally or in a separate entity, and buyers may want to lease them, buy them or exclude them. Decide with your advisor before going to market, because the answer changes how bidders model the business and what rent they assume.
What multiple should a building products distributor expect?
This guide gives no multiple. The ProCloser deal index, which tracks 2,211 technology and software acquisitions with a data date of October 31, 2026, holds no building products or lumber distributor targets, so it cannot support one. Multiples depend on size, margin, mix and growth. For general ranges across industries, see the EBITDA multiples by industry guide and ask each advisor for sold comparables.
How do I verify an advisor's distribution record?
Open the advisor's own transaction page and check four things: the seller is a distributor, the advisor's role is stated as seller side, the buyer is named and the date is shown. Then call the seller or the buyer for a reference. Where a page has no date, as several in this guide do, ask the firm when it closed and who ran it.
Is it better to sell to a consolidator or a family-owned competitor?
The two paths price and structure differently. Consolidators in the named deals above, such as US LBM and SRS Distribution, buy at scale and bring their own systems. A local competitor may offer a simpler close but a smaller field of bidders. A good advisor runs both tracks and shows you the offers side by side.
How is this list ranked?
Firms are scored on five weighted criteria: published distribution deal record (35), building products sector focus (25), fit for founder and family owned companies (20), named senior team (10) and dated recent deals (10). Evidence comes only from each firm's own website, and the list is explained in the methodology section.
Is ProCloser an M&A advisor, and does it benefit from this list?
ProCloser is not an M&A advisor, runs no sale processes and takes no success fee on any transaction. It operates a matching service that introduces sellers to advisory firms and may receive compensation when you connect through it. That is a conflict, so read the disclosure at the bottom and verify each advisor yourself.

Where ProCloser Fits
ProCloser is not an M&A advisor, does not run sale processes and does not take a success fee on any transaction. We operate a matching service that introduces sellers to advisory firms, some of which appear above.
That last clause is a conflict and you should treat it as one. Read the editorial disclosure at the bottom of the page. Then check each advisor's record yourself, because the opinion that should decide your mandate is the one you form after calling references.
